BROKER'S COMMENTS

The opportunity to follow through - from sketches (perhaps grounded in childhood), to drawings, to reality - the design of that somehow most romantic of pleasure vessels, a traditionally inspired schooner yacht, must have been a great thrill for her designer, working with a commissioning owner up for some adventure. The idea was to carry her owning family to warmer waters in some style, without fuss and anxiety.

Despite what Ed Burnett might have said below, perhaps when pressed about influences, AMELIA’s hull design is clearly a gentle evolution from the highly successful late 1990s 30 ft ZINNIA design created in partnership with Nigel Irens: a very good idea indeed. Great attention would, of course, have been applied to the special requirements of a schooner’s sail area distribution - to get the ‘drag’ in the keel profile just right. But in many ways, she’s simply a double size ZINNIA, which means that she feels much bigger than she is, sails like a dream, and rewards great pride in ownership.

AMELIA has now ticked all the boxes for two owners. The first did indeed sail her down the Portuguese Trades to the warm waters of the Mediterranean where she was lightly used there until entering present ownership in 2010 when her home port moved north to Belgium.

In current ownership, through much experience by use, AMELIA’s rig has been gradually and relatively subtly modernised/ optimsed for both performance and ease of short-handed sailing by a couple. While down below her accommodation has been delightfully transformed from New England style simplicity to the feel of a cosy Edwardian gentleman’s club. One can imagine spending a lot of time down there while reeling off the sea miles with aplomb.

DESIGNER’S COMMENTS

ED BURNETT DESIGN NO. 125
There are many influences in the design of AMELIA. It is not unusual for schooners to be viewed as primarily an American fashion, although this isn’t actually true: over the years there have been many fine British and European schooners. That said, having passed countless hours in my youth absorbing lines from the likes of John Alden, Philip Rhodes, Starling Burgess, and also having spent time in yards in the States, it is likely that a fair bit of American influence has crept into this boat. She remains perhaps mid-Atlantic, with characteristics and features that could be attributed to either side of the ocean.

AMELIA’s hull form treads the usual fine line, searching for interior volume whilst striving to retain the subtlety that lends performance and grace. Longer ends and less beam might have enhanced the latter, but as a family cruising boat she provides comfortable accommodation in a hull that, whilst powerful, is not overbearing.

In a boat of this sort there is plenty of fun to be had in determining rigging and gear arrangements. AMELIA’s hardware was source from Europe and the US, notably Freeland Yacht Spars (Collars), Colin Frake, Daveys and Totnes Foundry & Fabrication, with bespoke items by Port Townsend Foundry.

Many would view a rig such as this as being complicated and perhaps even a little intimidating, although I prefer to see it as an accumulation of simple principles. Considered in this way it is not nearly so daunting to piece together the arrangements, nor to figure out how it all works if stepping aboard for the first time. The benefits to a light crew are realised in the modest area of individual sails, and the many options available for the overall management of the vessel.
