BROKER'S COMMENTS

David Hillyard established a reputation as a builder of pinnaces and other wooden vessels for the Admiralty during World War I. Then in the early 1920s he started to build yachts for private ownership at his Littlehampton yard - and the particular quality of his boats for sea kindliness is legendary. LADY CORINNE is double ended and planked in pitch pine on oak frames. Her current owners are responsible for the boat’s impressive condition with a significant refit including a new deck in 2009. LADY CORINNE has repaid them in kind - safely taking them to the Caribbean and back - meanwhile snatching silverware from some larger vintage yachts as only a brave Hillyard can!

History notes

LADY CORINNE’s build was started at Hillyards in Littlehampton in 1939 and the hull completed before the yard was obliged to turn its attention to the war effort. During the War years she lay in a mud berth where the salt water preserved her timbers until she was finished and commissioned in 1945. She was incidentally the first boat to be launched from that yard after the war.

She has had a colourful life including many years as an RAF adventurous training yacht; replacing one of their Windfalls; the former Luftwaffe owned yachts, which had foundered on rocks somewhere off the French coast.

The current owners returned to Chichester in 2015 from a 16 day Trans Atlantic crossing. Prior to that she had cruised extensively in the Caribbean, during which period she also entered her in the 2010 Antigua Classics, achieving a 2nd in class and 2nd place in the privately maintained Concours d’ Elegance.
