Summers and Payne 95 ft Yawl 1900 - Sold

Never before have we been able to display a recent picture of a fully restored yacht under full sail but then to offer her as a partial rebuild project. Certainly this has been a sad story for her current owners but in turn ARTEMIS represents an exciting opportunity for her next owner. Much of her ten year almost unlimited budget restoration remains intact and her very extensive inventory and perfectly crafted fittings very little used.

An understanding of the key works to be undertaken now to bring her back into seaworthy – if not concourse condition are outlined in the Project section below assisted by careful scrutiny of the pictures provided herein. The sailing pictures are one from 1904 and the other 2008 – post restoration. Otherwise they represent her present condition; the lighting of the interior pictures effectively revealing the present absence of planking below the water line.

This yacht is being sold with the hull in the condition as is. Any purchaser should indeed ascertain by survey the work, an outline assessment of which is given here, in order to cost the labour and materials to make her good; not for the purpose of negotiation. The listing price therefore reflects quite properly the very substantial inventory that goes with her.

Commissioned by Frank Pearson, son of the renowned architect John Loughborough Pearson and designed by Arthur E. Payne; ARTEMIS was built at the famous Summers & Payne yard in Southampton. The yard is noted for having built numerous beautiful yachts, including for example the nearly identical yawl LEANDER. Pearson ran the yacht with a paid crew of five and participated in several races, such as the Heligoland - and the Kiel Week races in the year 1900. After only four years of ownership however he sold to Colonel W. G. Nicholson, a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, who was to sail ARTEMIS most actively on the Home waters racing circuits up until 1938.

During WW II ARTEMIS having been de-rigged and her lead keel melted into bullets. was laid up as a house boat in West Mersea, It was in 1994 when, what remained of her was sold and shipped to Germany. An important NGO in Hamburg had acquired the hull for apprentice boat builders to be trained and qualified in the very process of restoring ARTEMIS. It was to take over a decade to achieve this, with several interruptions marking the periodic drying up of state support. In 2002 however the Foundation Stiftung Hamburg Maritim took over and finally managed to bring her back under sail again in 2008 after a very high quality refit. At the end of the first sailing season, some planking below the waterline was found very unfortunately to have been infested by a fungus, attributable to her having lain for a long period in the back waters of her dock - so she had to be laid up again. Repairs were started, but as the apprentice project no longer existed and sponsors could not be found, the Foundation has decided put her up for sale.

In detail
From the Deck house companionway steps descend forward. At the foot a corridor leads forward to the beautifully panelled saloon, which as L shaped seating and tables both sides.

A doorway through the forward bulkhead opens to the fwd head compartment to port and the fully equipped galley to starboard.

Forward again a doorway opens to the fore cabin crew accommodation, separately accessible by hatchway on the foredeck.

Coming back aft through the saloon are guest cabins; double to stbd and single to port.

Abaft and beside the companion steps is the captain’s / owner’s cabin to starboard and the main day head opposite with the navigation station abaft.

A doorway aft reveals the aft “Ladies” cabin with generous settees and berths with a further access to the en suite head aft.
