BROKER'S COMMENTS

The Square Metre Rule was much less restrictive than the competing International Rule and there is no doubt it encouraged fast and beautiful boats. This wonderful construction by renowned builder August Plym, careful ownerships – only four during the 20th Century and two since, combined with short seasons have preserved BOHEME in remarkable original trim.

A strong argument exists to reinstate her gaff rig as the pictures of her in the Swedish Maritime Museum take your breath away……….

History

BOHÈME was designed by Albert Andersson and built in 1912 by August Plym at his Neglinge ship yard in Båtbyggeri, Stockholm. She was built to the order of one A.H. Zethreaus a Stockholm banker. BOHÈME was among the fastest of the 75 sq. m yachts around 1912 -1913, winning a medal in every race during the 1912 Olympics - one of which was a gold.

Construction

The hull is built of Honduras mahogany planking on oak frames with every third frame in steel. The deck is the original Oregon pine over Honduras mahogany. The lead keel is about 2,200 kg.

Accommodation

BOHÈME has a main saloon and a forecabin. The saloon has four berths, a galley and seating for up to six people. The amidships dining table with folding legs can be stowed under one of the berths. The cabin forward of the mast has two berths and a hanging cupboard.

Rig, spars and sails

BOHÈME was originally gaff rigged but upgraded to a Bermuda rig during the 1960s. The mast is of spruce. The mast foot and the steel frames around the mast foot were changed in 2003. The mast foot was altered again in 2010. The mast and rig construction is a mix of stainless steel (backstay and shrouds) and galvanized. The sails; mainsail, genoa and jib are from the late 80s

Potential enhancements

While BOHÈME is considered to be in generally good condition, some improvements could be made, such as a new set of sails. The halyards could be renewed and perhaps the halyard winches. The galley would benefit from a new stove and fridge as well as better storage facilities.
